Twisted Sister

Tools you’ll need: curling iron (to prep the hair with waves), sectioning clips, teasing comb or brush, clear elastic rubber band, bobby pins, light to medium holding hairspray (to mist over at the end).

Ballerina Bun

TOOLS: water based pomade, 2 clear elastic ponytail holders, a comb or teasing brush, bobby pins.
  1. Flip your head over and put a little bit of pomade at the root. I like to do this because it makes the hair easier to braid by giving a little bit of soft/flexible hold. Braids are less likely to slip out when you use this.
  2. With your head still flipped, braid from the base of your neck going up to the crown area. Stop where you want the bun to start.
  3. When you reach your stopping point with the braid, tie the 3 braid pieces off with a clear elastic.
  4. You should still be upside down at this point. Now gather all of your hair into a high ponytail. Flip right-side-up and make sure it’s centered, then tie it off with your other clear elastic.
  5. Tease the hair with a comb or a teasing brush.
  6. Pin it into a classic bun shape.

The Braided Bun

Before you start, know that this hair style is just 5 simple braids, made into a bun shape. It makes things a little less complicated when you think of it like that. Ok, let’s get going:
TOOLS: curling iron, 5 clear elastics, bobby pins, sectioning clips and hairspray is optional!
  1. Start by curling your hair. Nothing too fancy, just a quick curl will do. The reason I suggest doing this is because it makes the loose ends easier to control. When hair is stick straight, it often pops right out of the braid, but you can avoid a lot of that when you bend the ends. This is a great braiding trick if you have lots of layers that tend to jump out! If you have curly hair already, skip this step.
  2. Section your hair off from ear to ear, going across the crown of your head and clip the sides up. Then, braid 3 sections in the back, just as Angela did above.
  3. Gently pull the braids apart for a looser, softer texture.
  4. This is what the braids will look like when pulled apart. See how much softer and wider they get? This will create a more natural overall updo.
  5. Bobby pin the 3 braids into a low bun. Cross them over each other, or weave them in and out of each other. Whatever looks best on you! Stop and check your profile in a hand mirror. This is really important. You want to make sure everything looks even and balanced from the sides and back!
  6. This is the fun part. The side braids will lay over the top so it could be fun to do french or fishtail braids here to mix it up! Angela stuck with regular braids. But if you don’t have bangs, it could be fun to do a french braid starting from the part.
  7. Pin and secure the side piece. Tuck the tail of the braid into the bun shape you’ve created.
  8. Repeat the braid on the other side.
  9. Pin and secure this piece into the bun shape as well. Tuck the tail end in and give it a light veil of hairspray for hold.
